To encourage westward settlement and to stimulate the economy, President Abraham Lincoln signed into effect the Homestead Act of 1862, shaping the entire development of the American West. For just a $10 filing fee, settlers could claim 160 acres of public land. But there was a catch: they had to "prove up" the land — meaning they had to build a home, cultivate crops, and generally improve the property for at least five years. After that, the land was theirs, free and clear. It attracted people from all walks of life, hoping for a fresh start. By the time the act ended in 1976 (or until 1986 in Alaska), over 270 million acres of land had been claimed, about 10% of U.S. land. The reality wasn’t always as simple as it sounded. Many settlers faced harsh conditions, like droughts, tough soil, and conflicts. Some couldn’t make it the full five years and had to abandon their claims. #realestate #natureismetal #history
